This page explains briefly how to image using the Meade DSI Pro CCD camera. More information on this camera can be found at http://www.meade.com/dsipro/index.html

Please adjust your monitor's brightness and contrast so you can see a shade difference between the Black and Black #2 below. This will assure good viewing of the images below.

08/24/2005. M27, First image taken at the CGO. Imaging conditions were horrible (very warm), and I'm still very much a novice with the camera. 50 images stacked, 300secs. total exposure @ 1224mm fl (f3).

08/25/2005. Image of M27. Played around with the corr. gain during guiding. Seem to net better star images. Also used Drizzle for de-rotation and extended view. Image size is 780x587. Drizzle also allows a 16bit image vs. the 8bit BMP image above. 42 images stacked, 168secs. total exposure @ 1224mm fl (f3). OAT 68 deg. F, imaging conditions horrible...

09/04/2005. Image of M27. Well...I'm having a hell of a time understanding Drizzle. It's seems that Drizzle runs the guide star and alignment star of the screen during extended views causing field rotation and stacking problems. So it's a must to re-run the images thru Drizzle again offline. Not as automated as I thought, and very time consuming...The image to the left is approx. 40 images stacked, 160 secs. total exposure, extended view 1.20 (780x587), pixel fraction 0.80, 1224mm fl (f3).

The image to the right was my first attempt at increasing the resolution in Drizzle (set to 2.0). The image size remains the same, but the resolution is doubled, creating a sharper image, although the file size is increased 4x (480k). It is approx. 10 images stacked, 40 secs. total exposure, resolution 2.0, extended view 1.20 (780x587), pixel fraction 0.80, 1224mm fl (f3). Both images processed with Autostar Image Processing, then stretched again with Envisage. Also, Meade just published Autostar Update 3. this puts Envisage at ver. 4.11.

09/11/2005 M57, the Ring Nebulea. 10 images stacked, 150 secs. total exposure, 1224mm fl (f3).

09/27/2005. M57 again. Fits3p in Drizzle with field rotation removed. 100 zoom, 100 extended view, .50 pixel fraction. 25 images stacked, 100 seconds total exposure. 1224mm fl (f3).

10/03/2005. M31 imaged thru a Meade 50mm finder. Field rotation removed with Drizzle, resolution set to 2.0, extended view 1.0, pixel fraction 0.20, Fits3p (16bit), processed with Photoshop CS, saved as a hi-res. JPEG, image size 1296 x 978, twenty 60sec exposures stacked @ 150mm fl (f3).

11/18/2005. M42 mosaic. Taken under a full moon and cloudy night. I'm going to wait until conditions improve to complete it, as it's a lot of work. Six 1296x768 images merged in Photomerge (Photoshop CS2). 1224mm fl (f3).

11/22/2005. M42 Mosaic. 21 images (five minute exposures each, 20x15sec) assembled in Photomerge (Photoshop CS). 1224mm fl (f3).

11/18/2005. M33, also taken under a full moon. Zoom 1.0 (image size 648x489), extended view 1.0, pixel fraction 0.50. Fifty 21.3sec exposures stacked. Rotation removed with Drizzle. No tracking, allowed to drift. Fits3p file saved as a high resolution JPEG in Photoshop CS2. 1224mm fl (f3).

11/23/2005. M33 mosaic. Same specs as image above. Image quality is poor due to the scope going thru the zenith (lot's of rotation). Total of 4 images.

11/18/2005. M77 taken under a full moon. Same specs. as the image above.

05/29/2006. M91, Charles Messier's mistake. As you can see there's nothing here at this location except NGC 4548 on the left side. 09/27/2005. Dust lanes of M31. Fits3p in Drizzle with field rotation removed, drizzle resolution 1.00, extended view 1.00, pixel fraction 0.50. I allowed the image to drift, no tracking. 48 images stacked, 552 seconds total exposure, 1350mm fl (f3).

09/29/2005. Mosaic of M31. 4 images using Drizzle field rotation, aligned with iMerge. You will see some mis-alignment as iMerge can not deal with the field rotation. 25sec exposures @ 1200mm fl(f3). Next time I will image the dust lanes seperately, then the core and try alignment with Envisage.

10/24/2005. Another M31 mosaic. This mosiac is the same data as above although Photoshop CS was used for merging and processing. The ESA/NASA FITS plug-in for Photoshop makes all the difference, as it does a much better job in stretching and image rotation. Image size 2505x1784. Note the possible NEO in the upper left hand corner.

11/17/2005. M74 taken under cloudy skies and a full moon. Will try again in a few weeks. Drizzle resolution 2.0, extended view 1.0, pixel fraction 0.85, allowed to drift, no tracking. Rotation removed with Drizzle. 45 images stacked @ 15sec. exposures each. Image size 1296 x 978. 16bit FITS, saved as a high res. JPEG. 1224mm fl (f3).

11/18/2005. M74 taken again before the moon made it's apperance. Same specs. as the image above, except zoom was set to 1.0, so the image size is 648x496.

11/27/2005. M1 Crab Nebulea. Taken on a some-what clear night. Zoom 100, extended 100, pixel fraction 0.75. No tracking, allowed to drift. Twenty five 21.2 sec. exposures @ 1224mm fl (f3). Processed with Photoshop CS2.

11/30/2005. M78, taken while low on the horizon. I will try again in a few weeks. Zoom 100, extended view 100, pixel size 0.75, no tracking, allowed to drift. Rotation removed with Drizzle. Total of 6 images using Photomerge. Each image was twenty five 21.2 sec exposures. 1224mm fl (f3)
